Africa Hunt Lodge allows the opportunity to hunt and harvest Trophy Class Hippo in South Africa. The Limpopo Province of South Africa is one of the premier destinations in the World to hunt the Hippo. Year round, we offer hunts for Trophy Hippo...there are no seasonal restrictions on hunting Hippo in South Africa.

Our hunters typically hunt the South African Hippo in conjunction with a 7-10 day African Safari. One of our Experienced and Licensed Professional Hunters will be your guide during your Hippo Hunt. We typically hunt Hippo Safari Style, Spot and Stalk. We can only accommodate Rifle as the method of hunting a Hippo (minimum .375 caliber) although we can accommodate hunters of any age and experience level.

The Hippo which we hunt on our South Africa Concession are some of the most beautiful in the World. You can expect a Gold SCI Trophy Hippo Bull or Cow on average when hunting with us, with some each year exceeding 36 inches.

We can also put together a great Hippo hunt for you in the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Here the Hippos are most numerous where a hunter will see up to 500 Hippo in a day, in their native environment. These hunts are conducted on boats and on foot along the banks of the Zambezi. The price on a Zambezi Hippo hunt in conjunction with the Premier Tiger Fishing Trip in the Zambezi River is approximately $24,000 USD total, although you can add on a Cape buffalo for around $7000 to this hunting and fishing safari.

African hippos, or hippopotamuses, are large herbivorous mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa.

What do Hippos look like:

Hippos are large semi-aquatic mammals, they have barrel-shaped bodies, short legs, short tails, and a large head. A male hippo weighs about 30% more than a female hippo. Their skin is mostly a grayish color that fades to a pink color underneath.

Hippo Habitat:

They are definitely adapted for life around lots of water. Hippos prefer areas with shallow water, like slow-moving rivers or lakes.

Hippo Diet:

Hippos are primarily herbivores, with their diet consisting almost entirely of plants. They usually leave the water and start grazing at sunset, where they eat up to 110 pounds of grass a night!

Hippo Behavior:

Hippos are known to be very territorial when it comes to protecting their offspring. When grazing, they are quite solitary and will not display territorial behavior on land. They are found in groups called pods, which can include anywhere from 40-200 individuals. They are considered to be one of the most dangerous animals in the world due to how aggressive they can be.

Hippo Conservation status:

The common hippo is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. They are threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their ivory canine teeth.
