The Brown Hyena (Hyaena brunnea) is a species of hyena native to southern Africa.
What do Brown Hyena look like:
Brown hyenas are the rarest of the four hyena species, and are distinguished by their long, shaggy grizzled brown coat. They have large rounded ears, and a mane on the back that stands erect when the hyena is agitated.
Brown Hyena Habitat:
The brown hyena lives in Southern Africa and coastal deserts, where it is called the beach wolf. They’ve adapted to a variety of habitats, from coastal regions to inland regions.
Behavior of the Brown Hyena:
Brown hyenas are nocturnal, but may be active during the day if it’s cooler. They’re mainly solitary animals, and are less sociable than spotted hyenas, but can be found in small groups. These animals are known for their scavenging behavior but thy also hunt small vertebrates and have plants.
Brown Hyena Diet:
The brown hyena is a scavenging carnivore, preying on just about any small animal. They will also eat insects, bird’s eggs, and wild fruits.
Brown Hyena Reproduction:
Brown hyenas give birth to a litter of 1-4 cubs after a gestation period of 90-110 days. Cubs are typically born in dens, and are very precocial.
Conservation status:
Brown hyenas are classified as “Near Threatened” on the IUCN Red List. They are threatened by habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and persecution due to misconceptions about their roles as predators.
